Forest of Reading Celebrations for 2009

Silver Birch

The Family Literacy Committee of Brant worked with our local schools and public libraries to facilitate the celebration of the Silver Birch portion of the Forest of Reading Program, for children in grades 4 to 6, on Tuesday, May 12th, 2009.
It was another great Forest of Reading event. We had a total of 259 participants (122 in the morning and 137 in the afternoon) at the Brantford Public Library. Shane Peacock and Mahtab Narsimhan were both fabulous. All the classes were really good and very engrossed in the workshops.

One teacher reflected upon the experience saying:

I just wanted to say thank you for getting us involved with the Forest of Reading Program! My students have loved the books, and GREATLY enjoyed the author visit. The authors were so good with the kids. In fact, they both emphasized the importance of the writing process, as well as the traits that we have been examining this year. One of the authors even showed us her personal writer's notebook, story planner, and the 8 drafts she wrote before publishing her novel.

Mahtab Narsimhan found out later that she won the Silver Birch Award for fiction this year with her book!!!!!!!

Shane Peacock talking about his nominated fiction book, Eye of the Crow.
